DARRENS IN THE GROOVE

Darren Clarke has won the Dutch Open in Zandvoort, near Amsterdam with a fantastic final round of 66 and a 16 under par total.

It was a performance that knocks on Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo’s door and a reminder that the Ulsterman can provide the experience Nick may be looking for to take into battle at Valhalla.

With a record of three wins out of three in the 2006 Ryder Cup, after a long layoff because of his late wife Heather's terminal illness, Clarke's recent surge of good form, including a sixth place in the WGC at Akron, will surely impress Faldo.

It is interesting to note that Clarke’s resurgence to form has coincided with him picking up a new Yes! C Groove Putter.

Director of Instruction for Harold Swash Putting School, Phil Kenyon, who is putting coach to many of the professionals on tour and whom represents Yes! Golf tells us more.

“The putter Darren picked up in Loch Lomond this year has a prototype shaft we have been developing. It’s a black coloured shaft that has weight located in a specific area, which very much changes the properties of the club and in turn performance. Darren loved it as soon as he picked it up. The testing we have done has shown it can help improve a player’s tempo and rhythm as well as stability and consistency  in their stroke. There have been a few guys out here that have tested it in practice but Darren was the first one to put it in play and he has had great results with it since”

LUNDBERG CONQUERS RUSSIA

Mikael Lundberg has won the Inteco Russian Open Golf Championship at the Meriden Moscow Country Club, shooting a final round score of 68. It was déjà vu for the 35 year-old Swede from Helsingborg who also won here in 2005, in a stylish comeback after having lost his card in 2003.

With the new addition of a Yes! Donna Putter in the golf bag, Lundberg finished on 21 under par at Le Meridien Moscow Country Club for a two-shot victory over Spain's Jose Manuel Lara.

After pulling his drive into the trees on the 15th, Lundberg hit a tree with his recovery attempt and had to hack out down the fairway with his third shot, but then pitched to seven feet and holed for a vital par.

He then drilled a magnificent 25 foot putt for birdie on the 16th and from five feet for another birdie on the 17th to give himself the privilege of playing the last with a two-shot lead.

A par promptly followed to give the Swede his second career title on The European Tour."This is my absolute favourite place, everything is great here," said Lundberg, who lost his card yet again in 2006 but returned to the tour via the Challenge Tour last year.

"On 15 I hit a terrible drive in the trees but managed to save par somehow and I holed two great putts on 16 and 17. The save on 15 turned everything around."

Lundberg first had a dalliance with Yes! Putters in 2005, according to Phil Kenyon – Yes! Golf tour rep and director of instruction at the Harold Swash Putting School in Southport.

“Mikael is known as a real gentleman on the Tour with a great sense of humour but he’s got determination too,” says Kenyon. “It was the launch earlier this year of The Donna hybrid putter that rekindled Mikael’s interest in C-Groove technology. He and I spent some very useful hours on the SAM system just prior to The French Open at the end of June, and he was shaping up well then.

“We’re really pleased for him, as well as for Teta Sports in Moscow who just recently became the distributor for Yes! Golf in The Russian Federation. Could this all mean we’re a little closer to seeing our first Russian European Tour hopeful?”

PADRAIG DEFENDS HIS TITLE

Congratulations to Padraig Harrington who succesffuly defended his Open Title at Royal Birkdale.

A stunning ealge 3 at 17th hole sealed a remarkable final round performace which saw him become the first european to win back to back majors since 1906.

Padraig was seen on BBC TV's Look North West Tonight programme on the Tuesday prior to beginning his defence talking about the influence putting coach Harold Swash has had on his a career.

However it wasnt just his putting that pulled him through the tough conditions at Birkdale, his ball striking on the final day was of the highest order by Padriags own admission.

Henrik Stenson who also spent some time with putting coach's Harold Swash and Phil Kenyon during practicet finished tied 3rd after a final round 71.

Another notable performance came from Challenage tour player David Horsey. David who works with Phil Kenyon finished tied 67th in his first Major appearance. He had hoped for a higher positioning when he lay in the top 10 after round 2, but a poor 3rd round saw him slip back down the field.

HORSEY RIDING HIGH

England’s David Horsey captured his maiden European Challenge Tour title with a one-shot victory at the Telenet Trophy on a day of high drama.

Needing to birdie the par five 18th to win,Horsey found the heart of the green with his approach shot and duly two putted to become the 15th different winner on this season’s Challenge Tour Schedule.

Horsey who works with Putting Coach Phil Kenyon picked up a cheque for €22,400 which saw him climb into the top ten of the Challenge Tour Rankings, and in sight of a place on The European Tour next season.

He said: “It’s a brilliant feeling. To be honest I struggled a bit to start with today. But I hung in there with a few good putts, and finished strongly with three birdies in the last four holes".

KENYON CONTRIBUTES TO WOODS REVIEW

Phil Kenyon, Putting Coach and Director of Instruction at HSPSE, was interviewed by the broadsheet newspaper 'The Independant' in the review of Tiger Woods' build up to Augusta and the 2008 majors.Phil was asked what his views were on Tiger's putting and what made him so special on the greens.

Tiger doesn't seem to miss putts at clutch moments. He can handle the pressure and it's probably his mindset which sets him apart from everybody else on the greens. From a technical perspective I've never been close enough to see exactly what he does, although what I have noticed is his tempo and the intensity he puts in on the practice green. Tempo is crucial when it comes to distance control and as most putts are breaking putts out here, if you don't get the right pace then the ball doesn't go in.

Tiger's tempo doesn't change even when he is practising. You know, it's easy for players to just stand on the practice greens, knock in a few five-footers and have a chat with the caddie.

Tiger does not do that. He has these drills he uses and you can tell he's getting everything he possibly can out of that time. He then takes this intensity on to the greens on the course. It's frustrating, but most pros don't have specialised putting coaches; I don't think Tiger does. But how he differs is that he knows his own stroke. He uses a system that we also use, which basically measures 27 different parameters of the stroke. It collates the info in a database and so you can compare and know what you're doing when you're putting well.

A lot of the guys don't know necessarily what they do with their stroke and so have a tendency to tinker every week. It's obvious what that does to consistency. Tiger's like Nicklaus when he's over a putt. He can almost will the putt in the hole.

FISHER SHOWS CLASS

Congratulations to 19-year old Englishman Oliver Fisher who showed terrific guts despite losing a nail-biting playoff against Frenchman Thomas Levet for the Andalucia Open in Marbella this weekend.

Fisher has been carrying the Yes! Putter since the start of the 2008 season, when he visited the Harold Swash Putting School at Yes! Golf in Southport to look at improving an area of his game he considered a weakness in 2007 .

After struggling on the greens somewhat in Korea recently, and eager for continuity in his work he requested the help of putting coach Phil Kenyon for an intensive day's coaching on the Monday prior to the Andalucia Open.

Such commitment proved vital, as at Aloha he averaged 28 putts per round– 3 lower than his average during last season.

Well done Ollie keep up the good work.

ON THE 2ND DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY FEDERATION
GAVE TO ME........

Christmas time for most people is a time for celebrations or relaxation. For the Spanish National Golf Federation however, it was a time to put their top amateur golfers through an intensive training camp with HSPSE in preparation for the forthcoming season at the Escorpion golf club in Betera , Valencia Spain 27 th -29 th December 2007.

Invited by the Real Federación Españaola de Golf, the team of Harold Swash , Director of Instruction Phillip Kenyon and Accredited Instructor Michel Monnard worked with 32 of the country's leading amateur golfers on their putting technique.

On the eve of the camp HSPSE delivered a presentation to the Federation on the ‘HSPSE Putting Philosophy and Fundamentals'.

The first day then involved extensive data capture where each of the 32 players was assessed on their putting technique, accuracy and the quality of ball roll. To collect the data both dual camera video analysis and SAM Puttlab capture was used. The 2 nd day saw the players working extensively on their set up and stroke mechanics and addressing the importance of custom fitting in order to achieve specific results.

The final day saw the team working further on technique as well as green reading concepts and pre shot and practice routines.

The training camp was a huge success with Spanish Federation and its Team of National Coaches expressing their gratitude to the focused and thorough approach HSPSE brought. The players now embark on a long season with the first national event in only a few weeks time. We wish them best of luck for the 2008 season.

HARPER WINS EUROPRO TITLE

HSPSE student Lee Harper sealed a dramatic victory after a play-off in the final regular event of the PGA EuroPro Tour season.

Scottsman Harper, a member of Archerfield Links, ended on a five-under, the same total as Justin Evans, as both men then replayed the 18th hole on the final day of the Ladbrokescasino.com Masters, which was held at the Selsdon Park Hotel and Golf Club in South Croydon, Surrey.

Harper had started the third day on four-under but his hopes of winning the tournament looked to be slipping away when he hit a double-bogey six on the 384-yard par-four seventh. But he turned things round with three birdies in four holes - on the 12th, 14th and 15th – but a bogey on the 17th meant he would be competing in a play-off.

A putting average of 25 putts per round over the 3 days proves a fantastic reward for the hard work the flying scottsman has put into this part of the game recently.

Since working together Wilson has finished 2nd at the Deutsche Bank in Hamburg, picking up the biggest cheque of his career, and then followed that up with a 5th place finish at Crans sur Sierre in the Omega Masters which sealed his place in the Seve Trophy Team.

Nick Faldo savoured his first taste of victory as a captain as his Great Britain and Ireland team stormed to an 8-2 singles success and an overall 16 ½ - 11 ½ victory in the event.

HORSEY GALLOPS THROUGH STAGE ONE

Englands David Horsey made a succesfull transition from amateur to professional golf when he negotiated the first 'hurdle' of the European Tour School at St Annes Old Links in England.

Horsey's final round of 68 for a 13 under par total of 275 gave him a three shot win over Jason McCreadie of Scotland as 36 players progressed to the next phase.

Horsey who works with HSPSE Director of Instruction Phi Kenyon, made his professional debut on the back of a very exciting amateur career that culmiated recently with an outstanding performance in the Walker Cup for GB & I against USA.

WE COME FROM A LAND DOWN UNDER

Harold Swash, Phil Kenyon and Michel Monnard have returned home after a busy but successful 2 week trip to Australia where they attended the Australian PGA show and conducted their first ‘HSPSE Level One Accredited Instructor' training programme in the southern hemisphere.

The PGA show was a huge success with Harold Swash himself making several personal appearances on the Yes Golf stand where he was co promoting the Yes! Golf C Groove Putter he created.

After the show the hardwork continued at the exclusive Royal Pines resort where HSPSE held their Level One Accredited Instructors training programme. Two of the attendees on the programme where Mark Gibson and Glenn Joyner. Mark Gibson is a 2 time winner of the Australian PGA coach of the year and a well respected figure in Australian Golf. Glenn Joyner has been a touring pro worldwide for over 20 years and as teaching pro as been sought after on the short game through the reputation he build up in this area as player.

Both were extremely complimentary on what they gleaned from working through the programme.

Mark Gibson stated that the 2 days represented ‘One of the most significant moments in his teaching career' while Glenn found the course a revelation and total value for any coaching professional that was eager to understanding the true fundamentals of putting and develop himself as a coach.

SALLY MAKES HER MARK

Scotland's Sally Watson, at only 16 years of age, left her mark as 'one to watch in the future' of the womens game when she not only qualified for the Ladies British Open at St Andrews, but went on to make the cut with a creditable performance.

The teenager, who has just completed her first year at the David Leadbetter Academy in America , said: "It was an amazing experience
, to make the cut and play so well in my first Major - I really can't put into words how much this has meant to me."It's also got me thinking a lot more about my future. I definitely want to become a professional and join the LPGA Tour - but I need to finish school and then make a decision about going to college or turning professional."Once I'm 18, I'll have to make the choice."

Sally had recently visited HSPSE where she worked on her putting technique with Phil Kenyon. On the visit she was accompanied by her father Graham who went onto to caddie for her at St Andrews. As well as working on some important technical points Sally also took away with her a custom fitted C Groove putter that she used very effectively during the Ladies Open. In particular Graham her father saw the difference the visit had made in.

"I do attribute her doing so well at the Open in significant measure to our visit to Southport! Thanks for all your support and help" Graham Watson

GIRL POWER

HSPSE were pleased to welcome ladies European Tour Starlet and German No1 Martina Eberl to the studio in Southport recently for some fine tuning before she headed up to Ladies British Open at St Andrews.

Martina who has finished in the top 50 on the Ladies European Tour the last 2 years has identified putting as a key area in the game she needs to improve. Hopefully the hard work she has putt in recently will pay dividends at St Andrews, in what wil be an historic event, as this is the first time the ladies have played a tournament on the 'Old Course' at St Andrews.

We wish Martina all the best at St Andrews and indeed the rest of the season.

MAJOR WIN FOR PADRAIG

Padraig Harrington has become the first Irish winner of The Open Championship since Fred Daly in 1947. He clinched the title in nail-biting fashion in a four-hole play-off with Sergio Garcia of Spain at the Carnoustie Golf Club in Scotland.

All those associated with HSPSE would like to congratluate the popular Irishman on this historic win.
Padraig has long been a believer of Harold Swash's Putting Fundamentals and the work they have done over the years held him in good stead as he made crucial putts on the 1st and 4th play off holes to get his hands on the coveted claret jug.

In an emotional interview Padriag told BBC TV 'Obviously I've come a long way. When I turned pro I'd have settled for being a good journeyman golfer. It's been great being named as someone who could win a major but that brings its own pressure. I''m sure there's a hell of a party (in Ireland) now and I know I don't have anything to do for two-and-a-half days so I'm going to party on."

STORM RECIEVES AWARD

Harold Swash and Phil Kenyon were at hand at the Open Championship at Carnoustie to present Graeme Storm a trophy awarded to him by Yes! Golf, in honour of his recent maiden european tour win.

Graeme's win at the 2007 French Open was achieved using a Yes! C Groove Dianna Putter as designed by Harold Swash. This was Yes! Golf's 2nd European Tour win in 2007 after Gonzalez Fernando Castano won the Italian Open using a Callie f.

It was particulalry pleasing for Phil to present the trophy to Graeme in light of having played alognside Graeme in thier amateur days and on the lower tier professional tours before Graeme broke through on the main European Tour.

HAROLD SWASH SUFFERS FALL AT AUGUSTA

We are sorry to report that Harold Swash sustained three broken ribs last Tuesday night in Augusta, Georgia. He is recovering at University hospital in Augusta and expects to remain there for a few more days. When released, he will likely stay in Augusta at the home of Dr. Robert Johnson for several days until he is ready to travel back to his home in the U.K.

Dr. Johnson (bother of former Augusta National Golf Club Chairman, "Hootie" Johnson) was one of three doctors who attended to Harold nine years ago when he barely beat the "grim reaper" after collapsing on the putting green at the Masters suffering from a burst aortic aneurism. Harold has made a point over the years to remain in touch with the Augusta doctors and hosted them and their wives to a dinner party Tuesday evening to again express his appreciation for the life saving work they did on that occasion. In the process of getting settled in his hotel room for the night, Harold stumbled and fell onto a small table resulting in the broken ribs. He was unable to move or even to speak out and remained in his fallen position for nearly 15 hours until a cleaning maid entered his room.

Harold has since been improving daily and is iin good spirits. I know he is comforted by the caring attention he is recieving from the doctors and nurses, many of whom were also on duty during the ordeal of the past.

We wish him all the best.

Accompanied by Fremke Dekson, as Robert was busy playing in the Johhny Walker classic in Thailand, both Maikke and Willem spent a day fine tuning their putting with Phil Kenyon and Andrew Sumner.

Both students had made great progress and are clearly two great prospects to look out for. HSPSE would in particular like to thank Femke and Robert Jan Derkson supporting Junior Golf in the way they do.

HSPSE LAUNCH THE POCKET SHOTS SERIES

HSPSE are pleased to announce their involvement in the release of a distinctiive new coaching medium known as 'Pocket Shots'. Pocket Shots are a range of pocket sized instructional booklets.

There are many great golf instruction books and magazines already out there, but they are not really practical to take out onto the course, practice range or driving range. With the Pocket Shots range you can take these expert game enhancing drills, tips and lessons to where you need them most due to their unqiue size and format. Smaller than a passport the Pocket Shots uses special folds so that you can easily fold and unfold within a second to read the booklet.

The HSPSE Pocket Shots gives you the secrets to a good putting stroke. The new pocket-sized folding format allows you to take the lesson with you when you practice or play. Harold Swash and Phillip Kenyon have coached some of the most famous names in golf including Padraig Harrington, David Howell, Nick Faldo and Darren Clarke to name a few. In this lesson, they share the secrets of a solid repeatable putting stroke, one that will lower your scores and increase your enjoyment of golf. It covers all you need to know about putting; the four fundamentals, putting grip, golf ball position, posture, stance, reading greens, and practice drills.

KM WINS ON HOME SOIL

Karen Margrethe Juul put the seal on a magnificent performance with a final round 68 to claim her first Ladies European Tour victory on home soil at the Nykredit Masters in Denmark.

The 30-year-old from Copenhagen who has worked with HSPSE at both the Ladies British Open and on the eve of the Danish Open, finished four strokes clear of England 's Laura Davies and Trish Johnson, at Odense Eventyr Golf Club. In fact it was a 1-2 for HSPSE with Trish Johnson finishing 2nd. Trish had also worked with HSPSE at both Lythm for the British and on both the Tuesday and Wednesday in Denmark.

Karen whose previous best finish in a Ladies European Tour event was fourth in the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open, proved unstoppable in front of the home galleries and won on a total of 15-under-par 275. The win earned her €30,000 (£20,380).

"Its fantastic," said Juul. "This is the best place I could ever have won a tournament. I was pretty nervous on the last few holes but my caddy Rasmus helped to keep me cool."

THE ITALIAN JOB

As the tour moves back to Asia once more, HSPSE can reflect upon 2 weeks good work when the European tour touched back to mainland Europe for the first time this season.

Both the Madeira and Portuguese Opens proved to be productive trips for HSPSE, with good showings from some of HSPSE's pupils including Lee Slattery and Ken Ferrie, while many other players picked up and used the c groove putter to great effect, including Jean Van der Velde (1st Madeira) and Anthony Wall (2nd Portugal)

HSPSE are now looking forward to attending the Italian Open 1st- 3rd May where director of Instructrion Phil Kenyon will be supporting HSPSE pupils and Yes! golf staff players.

In particluar Jean Van Der Velde ended a 13 year wait for his second European Tour title using the Sophia C Groove Putter he picked up only recently. The frenchman pipped England's Lee Slattery, who recently worked with HSPSE's Director of Instruction Phil Kenyon and is a long time user of the C-Groove putter.

LANCASHIRE UNION ATTEND HSPSE

Chairman of selectors Cliff Bowman brought some of Lancashire Counties hotest prospects to HSPSE in preparation for the forthcoming amateur season.

Harold a former Lancashire Seniors champion and Phil a former county player were at hand to pass on advice in the hope of making them more ruthless on the greens in 2006.

Cliff was thoroughly satisfied with the visit "I can only stress to the lads that they must focus positively on what they have been told now, what Harold and Phil have said and shown makes sense, now we've just got work postively towards it".

HOWELL OPENS UP IN STYLE

HSPSE student David Howell launched his 2006 European Tour season in perfect style with a superb three shot victory over World Number One and final round playing partner, Tiger Woods, at the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.

After a recent visit to HSPSE on the 1st November, where Dr Paul Hurrion ran his eye over David’s Putting Stroke, the hard work would seemed to have payed immeadiate dividends.

An understandably ecstatic Howell said: "This is something I dreamed of but probably didn't think was going to come true. You end up in the last group playing with the World's Number One and you know it's going to be a big day in your career.

"Obviously I am quite pleased with myself; the way I handled myself and was able to come out on top. It was a massive learning experience for me today and hopefully it can really help me in the future."

Howells victory was built upon a solid putting week with an average putts per round of 27.25, which coupled with an improving long game as the week went on led to an impressive 20 under par winning total.

The victory was also achieved with a new Yes Golf! C Groove Putter. Although the same model as the one he has been using most of the year, David picked up a new ‘Callie’ with a slight technical modification whilst visiting HSPSE prior to his departure for China.

All at HSPSE would like congratulate David on his victory. Well done!

2005 PUTTING STATS

The 2005 Reuters Stats released by the European Tour at the conclusion of the Volvo Masters make interesting reading.

After such a successful year it is no suprise to see David Howell in 4th place on the putts per round category with an average 28.3. David also finished 4th in 2004 with an average of 28.5. It is nice to see the improvement David has made since he first visited HSPSE in early 2004 after averaging 29 in finishing 19th on the putts per round category in 2003. One of the features David has taken on board this year, that he feels has helped, is using a shorter putter. David now uses 32 inch Callie that is counterbalanced to provide the right feel and weight he requires. As he discussed recently on the Sky Sports World of Golf Programme the short putter has enabled David to get more easily into the ideal posture and develop a more in line stroke.

Long standing pupil of HSPSE Padraig Harrington also continues to display consistantly high performances on the putting stats. 2005 shows Padriag as averaging 28.4 putt per round for 5th place in the category. A increase of 6 places form 2004 when he averaged 28.7.

One of the biggest improvements this year comes from HSPSE pupil Robert Jan Derksen who has managed to improve his stats from 30.1 putts per round in 2004 to 29.2 putts per round in 2005. Thats a massive 3.6 shots per tournament. Robert as a result has risen from 100th in the putts per round category in 2004 to 34th in 2005 capturing his 2nd tour title on the way in Madeira this year.

Similar improvements has been shown by Steve Webster who has decreased his average from 30.3 to 29.8 putts per round. That equates to saving 2 shots a tournament, which makes make a huge difference at such a high level.

The one thing that all these players have in common is the desire to improve and better themselves, which is how they have come to work on their putting in such a constructive fashion. HSPSE would like to congratulate all its pupils on their hard work this year and hope that the good times continue to ROLL!!

HSPSE VISITS VALDERAMMA

The team at HSPSE have just returned form a busy trip to Valderamma and the 2006 Volvo Masters.

Primarily to work with the Tour players that are under the guidance of HSPSE Harold Swash, Dr Paul Hurrion and Phil Kenyon also used the trip to shoot some footage for the forthcoming instructional DVD.

Pupils of HSPSE that were competing at Valderamma inlcuded Padraig Harrington, David Howell, Steve Webster, Martin Lafaber, Robert Jan Derksen and Stephen Gallagher.

During the week Harold Swash himself also took the opportunity to present David Howell with a trophy to comemorate David on his victory in the 2006 BMW Invitiational. The trophy was presented by Harold on behalf of Yes Golf. David has been using the C Groove putter manufactured by yes golf and designed by Harold Swash and by his own admission it has played a large part in his success this season.

HSPSE would like to congratulate all its pupils that made it to the tours premier event and hope that their success continues next season.
